Is high fructose diet leading to ‘berry belly’? - June 30, 2008
The Daily Telegraphy reported last week on research that could lead to warnings over the dangers of a high fruit diet.
Scientists have discovered that fructose, the sugar found in fruit and vegetables, causes weight to build up around the stomach rather than being spread around the body.
It is already known that people with an apple-shaped body type, carrying most of that weight around the middle, are at greater risk of diabetes and heart disease. The researchers who conducted the latest study are speculating that the official advice to consume higher levels of fruit — often obtained through fructose-concentrated juices and smoothies — could be contributing to a new phenomenon — ‘berry belly’.
