The recipients of 2019’s Sustainable Beauty Awards have been announced at a reception in Paris by award organizer Ecovia Intelligence.

Among the winners were the UK’s Keracol Dr. Craft, which won New Sustainable Product for its haircare products made using blackcurrant pulp left over from the production of drinks.

Best Sustainable Ingredient was awarded to Ashland from the US. Its Cb2 skin biofunctional material is a patchouli-derived skin cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) activator. The patchouli has been sourced from sustainable farms in Colombia.

Germany’s Henkel took the Sustainable Packaging award for its social plastic initiative. Henkel has partnered with Plastic Bank to collect plastic waste from waterways to use in the packaging of its personal care and homecare products.

The winner of the Sustainability Pioneer award was AAK Personal Care from Sweden, which  received top prize for its sustainable sourcing of shea nuts. Its Kolo Nafaso programme is having a positive impact on over 230,000 women shea collectors in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

The award for Sustainability Leadership went to Hair O’right International (Taiwan), which has undertaken a number of green initiatives, such as carbon-neutral production, sustainable packaging, and using food by-products as raw.

Commenting on the awards, Ecovia Intelligence director, Amarjit Sahota, says: “Sustainability is becoming an integral feature of the beauty industry, with operators across the supply chain actively undertaking green initiatives. The winners and finalists of the 2019 Sustainable Beauty Awards reflect this development. Winners were dedicated natural/sustainable brands (Hair O’Right, Dr Craft), a multinational (Henkel), as well as ingredients firms AAK Personal Care and Ashland.”
