Lush (UK) scooped New Sustainable Product with its Naked Mascara at the 2022 Sustainable Beauty Awards, with Weleda (Switzerland) being named top Sustainability Pioneer for its Save Earth’s Skin campaign.

The Sustainable Beauty Awards are organized by Ecovia Intelligence and aim to give recognition to businesses who are ‘pushing the boundaries of sustainability in the beauty industry’, and the winners were announced at a dedicated reception at the Paris Marriott Champs-Elysées on the 7 November.

Laboratoires Expanscience (France) gained top prize in the Sustainable Ingredient category with its Calybiota Bio which is obtained from the calyx of red kapok flower, sustainably sourced from Burkina Faso, and is used in feminine hygiene products.

“Sustainability has become an integral part of the beauty industry”

The Sustainable Packaging award was won by Clariant (Switzerland) for its Design4Circularity Packaging Concept, created in partnership with Beiersdorf, Siegwerk, and Borealis, which enables complete sortability in current recycling infrastructures.

Commenting on the awards, Amarjit Sahota, chair of the awards’ judging panel, says: “Sustainability has become an integral part of the beauty industry, with ingredient firms, packaging suppliers, retailers and cosmetic brands investing in various initiatives. This year, we saw a lot of innovation from the entrants to the Sustainable Beauty Awards; these innovations involved sourcing from waste streams (upcycled ingredients), developing novel products (waterless cosmetics and microbiome-friendly products), new packaging formats (designed for circularity) and new initiatives, such as improving soil fertility and developing traceable supply chains. The winners in each category reflected these trends.”
