Natural skincare brand Cosy Cottage has launched a ground-breaking home cleaning range designed to be tough on grime but gentle on skin and the planet. The Yorkshire-based company has partnered with biotechnology firm Holiferm to develop the first product in the line: a Multi Surface Eco Cleaner powered by innovative biosurfactant technology.
Formulated for households looking to avoid harsh chemicals, the new cleaner is free from ingredients that typically cause dryness or irritation, making it safe for people with sensitive skin, as well as for children and pets. The formula’s key ingredient is a true biosurfactant – wholly plant-derived, COSMOS-approved, and readily biodegradable – developed by Holiferm in the North West of England.
The launch marks a significant step forward in British-made sustainable home care, with every aspect of the product sourced and produced in the UK. The cleaner is manufactured in Cosy Cottage’s workshop in Malton, Yorkshire, using biosurfactants created by Holiferm at its Wirral-based facility. These biosurfactants are made using natural fermentation processes that avoid solvents and minimise environmental impact. They score 100% on the Renewable Carbon Index – a measure of carbon derived from renewable sources.
The first product in the range, the Cosy Cottage Multi Surface Eco Cleaner, is a concentrate designed to be diluted with tap water, reducing packaging waste and carbon emissions from transport. Fragranced with essential oils of lemongrass and lavender – both known for their antibacterial properties – the cleaner comes in 15ml recyclable bottles and can be paired with a 500ml refillable glass spray bottle.
Clara Challoner Walker, founder of Cosy Cottage, said:
“We have sought to develop a range of cleaning products for a long time but wanted to make sure we were creating a product that were effective, gentle to skin and cared for the planet. After 8 years and following the progress made by a team of scientists in the North of England, we have created a range featuring an ingredient list we are proud of.
“We know there is plenty of interest from consumers in cleaners with natural ingredients but so many commercial products purport to be powered by nature, while still containing artificial fragrances and actives that can upset our skin and the environment. With this range, we strive to inform consumers and give them true transparency on how natural ingredients can be gentle, while still cleaning, freshening and caring for their homes.”
Richard Lock, Managing Director of Holiferm, said:
“As a UK scale-up, we’re thrilled to see our Sophorolipids featured in Cosy Cottage’s latest launch. It’s incredibly exciting to contribute to innovation within a homegrown brand, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to support sustainable and high-performance formulations in the market.”
The Multi Surface Eco Cleaner starter set – which includes a 500ml glass bottle, two 15ml concentrates, and a reusable natural cleaning cloth – is available from 30 May 2025 for £24, both online and in store.
